Full Job Description

The essence of the job is two-fold:  1) Maintain and continuously improve HMJ’s existing systems.  2) Anticipate HMJ’s future needs and build new systems in order to accommodate them.  As a startup, HMJ is constantly reinventing itself.  To succeed, you will need to be excited by the prospect of change and continuous improvement, but also focused on ensuring a high level of service (predictability, consistency, responsiveness) to our existing customers at all times.  While working to support the overall vision and initiatives set by the founders, you will have a great deal of autonomy to evolve the company’s internal operations as you see fit.  HMJ is a highly collaborative environment where innovation and risk-taking is both supported and encouraged, out-of-the-box thinking is welcomed, and healthy debate is part of the decision-making process.  Above all, at HMJ you will find a small, but truly fantastic group of people to work with.  There is very much a “HMJ way,” so if you’re a good fit for our style, we know that you will love coming in to work each day – we all do.

We are looking for a Director of Operations to oversee our organization’s ongoing operations and to help us manage our growth. You will be the company’s second-in-command and responsible for the overall efficiency and day-to-day operations of the business. As a key member of the management team, you will report directly to the founders, who also serve as CEO and CFO.

As Director of Operations, you will:

  • Assist the founders in designing and implementing business strategies, plans and procedures
  • Set goals for performance and growth
  • Establish policies that promote the company’s culture and vision
  • Oversee daily operations (e.g., purchasing, production, distribution)
  • Lead employees, encouraging maximum performance and dedication
  • Analyze and interpret data and metrics
  • Write and submit reports to the founders in all matters of importance

You must have:

  • Great people and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Business acuity
  • A strong work ethic
  • Eagerness for constructive feedback
  • The “startup mindset” – a willingness to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty, get whatever needs to be done, done whenever it needs to be done (sometimes evenings, weekends, etc.)
  • Fluency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (and/or their Google Docs counterparts) and the ability to find/develop technological solutions to operational challenges

It would awesome (but not necessary) if you have:

  • Experience in food/beverage consumer packaged goods (CPG)
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Production and scheduling experience
