Full Job Description

Off the Grid’s Controller is responsible for the Company’s Accounting, Tax, and Compliance functions. This position will manage a nimble yet efficient Accounting team, implement and maintain calable accounting systems, and ensure financial reporting objectives and requirements are met. 

An ability to identify, evaluate, and manage risk is essential for success in this role. The ideal candidate will be able to improve the systems we use to capture and report information in order to support a high growth and operationally complex business. This position must be able to partner effectively with our finance team, business line owners, and external stakeholders to provide relevant and timely financial information. 

The ideal candidate for this role has excellent communication skills, is highly organized, and has experience and interest in managing a team.  This position requires a CPA or equivalent, as well as robust technical accounting in a variety of industries. This is a Full Time role based at our Fort Mason Center location in San Francisco, and will report directly into the CFO, and manage one direct report: the Accounting Manager. 

Key Responsibilities:
This position will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:
  • Lead month-end and year-end close process; perform reviews to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP; publish timely financial statements including bank reporting; analyze variances from plan
  • Act as main point of contract for Bank, Auditors, and Tax stakeholders, and manage corresponding compliance and reporting processes for each.
  • Manage working capital by driving improvements in the areas of cash, food purchasing, and A/R collections.
  • Providing ongoing coaching and development and create an inspiring, long term vision for the accounting team
  • Partner with Finance team to assist in developing quarterly and annual forecasts.
  • Ownership of internal reporting structure to ensure information is delivered in a relevant and timely manner, and aligned with company goals and growth plans.
  • When necessary, prepare reporting and respond to document requests for investors, partners, banks, and other external stakeholders
  • Ensure proper administration and accounting for Company Equity Plan
 
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
 
Years of Related Professional Experience: 8 - 12 years professional Accounting experience
Educational/Position Requirements:
  • C.P.A or equivalent, robust technical accounting experience in a variety of industries (Big 4 Accounting experience a plus)
  • Excellent communication skills, both as an accounting team leader and within cross-functional relationships and non-financial audiences
  • 5+ years experience working directly with Auditors, Tax professionals, and other external stakeholders
  • Strong leadership and ability to attract, develop and coach high caliber individuals and teams
  • Food and/or manufacturing experience strongly desired
Computer/Software/Technical Applications: Netsuite (our ERP), Bill.com, Expensify, in addition to Google suite (Gmail, Docs, gCal, Sheets, Slides), Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, Dropbox, Slack
Languages: Ability to speak and understand English the primary language used in the workplace.
