Full Job Description

The Quality Laboratory Technician conducts sample processing and product evaluation using the tools and equipment available in the Quality Control Laboratory.   The Laboratory Technician maintains current, clear communication with both Quality Management and with Quality Control Technicians stationed in Production Areas to ensure critical information is transferred, appropriate  actions are taken, and samples are collected and processed according to schedule.

Under the oversight of the Quality Assistant Manager and the Quality Director, the Laboratory Technician follows Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures to grade product against an established standard for individual products and product lines, and alerts Quality Department Management in the event that product does not conform with the specification set.  The Laboratory Technician performs both organoleptic (tasting) analyses and chemical analyses on samples of every batch of product made. The Laboratory Technician logs the results of analysis into reference databases and periodically summarizes data for review.

Under the oversight of the Quality Assistant Manager and the Quality Director, the Laboratory Technician follows Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures to prepare samples, perform microbiological plating activities, and to interpret and record results of microbiological testing.

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for maintenance and organization of retained sample cases for the duration of the shelf life of each batch of product.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Sample preparation and microbiological sample plating
  • Organoleptic (tasting) analysis and chemical analysis of products produced
  • Updates of relevant databases and informational logs
  • Organization & maintenance of the library of Retained Sample Cases

Other Duties:

  • Assist with rotating projects and product investigations
  • Assist with root cause analysis for deviations or atypical observations
  • Communication with Quality Control Technicians
  • Take action as required under the Product Hold/Release Program
  • As needed for shift coverage, assist on the Production Floor for performance of Quality Department functions
  • Review inventory of laboratory supplies, and complete inventory reports for materials orders
  • Collect and evaluate samples of ingredients received by Warehouse Department for production use

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, or Food Science OR  3 years experience in a food sensory laboratory with experience conducting microbiological plating activities
  • Experience in food sensory analysis (product tasting and evaluation) preferred
  • Ability to conduct tastings of product containing tree nut or soy allergens
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
