2 Simple Tricks to Arrive Home from Work Happy and in a Good Mood

Ya know those days when something didn’t go as you hoped at work? Maybe you’re exhausted at the end of the day, or maybe you just simply weren’t in the best mood when you left the office and headed home.

Hopefully that does’t happen too often, but when it does, I have a couple of easy techniques to quickly change your mood.

I use these techniques to change my mood and they work.

Trick #1

This first one involves asking yourself the following question:  What are the benefits and costs of feeling this way right now?

If you answer that question honestly to yourself, you’ll quickly see that there are no benefits to feeling frustrated or being in a sour mood.  There are only costs.  And those costs could be things like not being the best father/mother you can be for your kids when you get home.  Or not being an enjoyable spouse to be around.  Or causing friction with other people in your family.  Or wasting your night bitching rather than doing something enjoyable and important.

Asking yourself this one simple question will reframe the importance of showing up at home in a good mood and cause that sour mood to melt away.

Trick #2

This one is even more simple.  Just smile.  Put a really big smile on your face when you’re commuting.  I don’t care if you commute for 5 minutes or 30 minutes.  Smile the entire way home.  And make it a good smile, not some half-ass smile.

Smiling changes the chemistry in your body and mind and makes it extremely difficult to be upset when you smile for an extended period of time.  And trust me, it works.

That’s it.  It’s as easy as that.

Good luck squashing those moments of being in a sour mood.  The world and the people in your life deserve your best self.  So give that to them.  Go home after work in a good mood.
